Horse Belt Buckle (Wrought Iron)

CA$110.00

This horse head belt buckle is made to fit a belt that is approximately one and a half inches wide. The pin on the back is bronze melted onto the iron.

Wrought iron is a material that was developed before technologies to completely melt and refine iron were in common use. The iron bloom from a furnace would be hammered and folded repetitively to work out the impurities. This yields an almost pure iron and has layers that look similar to the aesthetic of pattern welded steel (or Damascus steel). These buckles are etched with acid to bring out the contrast in the layers. The particular iron I use for this product is from the through-stay of an antique steam engine boiler and would’ve been some of the finest quality wrought iron available in its day.
