Tool Making Class (1-3 Days)
Tool Making Class (1-3 Days)
This is a private, 1-on-1 class. Contact me through the contact page of this website to plan dates, and make your $100 deposit by adding this “product” to cart, and purchasing it. The full cost is $500 for the first day, and $400 per day following that. Full payment is made with cash or E-transfer when you arrive.
Spend an intensive set of days making your very own tool set, while most importantly learning fundamental principles about forging, and the processes we will use to forge these tools. The amount of tools we get done depends on how many days we spend forging, as well as the focus and ability of the student. I can usually guarantee that the student goes home with a selection of tools that are worth just as much as what they paid for the class. Just to give a general idea of how many tools can be made in the amount of days you’d be interested in, here is a progressive list:
Day 1
-Cupping Tool, Rounding Hammer, 2x Hammer Eye Punches (one that the student directs)
Day 2
-Set of 6 Punches, 5/8” Bottom Fuller, 5/8” Top Fuller, Brazeal Hot-Cut, Hammer Eye Drift
Day 3
-Hammer/Pickup Tongs, Hump Tools, 3” Bottom Fuller (student directed), 3” Top Fuller (student directed
Day 4
-Flatter (traditional or elephant’s Foot), Set Hammer (student directed), Top Hot-Cut (student directed), Flat Bit Tongs
Other Tools That Can Be Made Include:
Top Swage, Bottom Swage, Edge Tool, Bolsters, Ultimate Tongs, Any Type of Hammer (including Sledge), Perpendicular Top Fuller, Hand Flatter, etc.
Depending on how many days, I will order the tools we do differently so the student gets the best learning value. We can also make different tools upon request, as well as include power-hammer work in our class. I will teach on main forging principles, as well little nuances that affect the aesthetics of your forgings, and how the information can be applied to other aspects of blacksmithing. I supply all of the raw materials. Please read all the details below, and contact me for questions.
I will walk you through the concepts of forging, and the theory behind all operations.
You will learn about:
-Layout
-Design
-Forging
-Striking (Sledgehammer Work)
-Grinding -Heat Treatment
-Making and Fitting Handles
IMPORTANT! You MUST have forging experience, and be of sound mind and body to take this course! You will be in a hot, dangerous, mentally and physically demanding environment. Swinging sledge hammers and forging big lumps of steel is no joke, so don't treat it as such! Bring a note pad, proper cotton work clothes, proper footwear, and PPE (leather gloves, safety glasses, ear protection and a dust mask or respirator). The classes starts at 8:30am every morning, and will probably end at 5:00pm every evening. You must bring a bag lunch, unless you want to purchase a provided meal. Accommodations available on-site, contact for more information. Directions to the shop, and a google map pin are on the contact page of my website. If you have any questions at all please call my cellphone: 780-385-1408
