Rounding Hammer Class (1 Day)
Contact me through the contact page of this website to plan a date, and make your $100 deposit by adding this “product” to cart, and purchasing it. The full cost is $450 for the day. Full payment is made with cash or E-transfer when you arrive.
Spend one day making your very own forging hammer, totally finished and handled, ready to use. You will be making a classic rounding hammer in whatever weight you’d like from 1 3/4 to 4 pounds. I will also be talking about principles and little nuances of forging that affect the aesthetics of your hammer, and how the information can be applied to other aspects of blacksmithing.
I will direct a hammer as demonstration while the student strikes for me, as the student follows along directing his own hammer while I strike for the student. In case the student makes an unfixable mistake or there is a crack during heat treatment, they are guaranteed to go home with a hammer because we will also finish the hammer that I direct.
I supply all of the raw materials and tools! Please read all of the details below and contact me for questions.
I will walk you through the concepts of forging, and the theory behind all operations. You will learn about:
-Layout
-Forging
-Striking (Sledgehammer Work)
-Grinding
-Heat Treatment
-Making and Fitting Handles
IMPORTANT! You MUST have forging experience, and be of sound mind and body to take this course! You will be in a hot, dangerous, mentally, and physically demanding environment. Swinging sledge hammers and forging big lumps of steel is no joke, so don't treat it as such!
Bring a note pad, proper cotton work clothes, proper footwear, and PPE (leather gloves, safety glasses, ear protection and a dust mask or respirator).
You must be AT LEAST SIXTEEN years old to take this class. (Exceptions can be made)
The class starts at 8:30am, and will probably end at 3-4pm that afternoon, with a half-hour lunch break. You must bring a bag lunch, unless you want to purchase a provided meal, in which case, call me!
Accommodations available on-site, contact for more information.
Directions to the shop, and a google map pin are on the contact page of my website.
If you have any questions at all, please call my cellphone: 780-385-1408
The Classic Rounding hammer, popularised and made famous through Brian Brazeal's teachings, has become known worldwide as the most versatile hammer available. The many dies, created by tilting the hammer head in certain ways means you can manipulate the steel with such great precision, control and ease, that you will rarely need to use another hammer. Even for the widest of lateral draws, simply tilting the hammer to reduce your surface area of contact will mean you will move your steel faster and cleaner than with any other hammer.
